Maria was born and raised in Nottinghamshire. After completing her B.Ed (Hons) Home Economics at Bath College of Higher Education, her first teaching post was in Plymouth.

In 1993, Maria moved back to Nottingham with her husband and started teaching in West Bridgford. In 2007, Maria moved to work for Nottinghamshire County Council as an Assistant SEN Officer and was quickly promoted to a Senior SEN Officer. Her work included work with families whose young people had a Statement of SEN/Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan).

Maria also worked closely with schools, both special and mainstream as well as a wide range of other professionals including Educational Psychologists, Social Workers, health professionals etc.

In 2016 Maria left the Council and now works for an Independent Alternative Provider of Education.

Maria has always wanted to become involved in the governance of a school and was delighted to be appointed to the Local Governing Body of The Beech Academy in November 2016.
