Penny was born in Shrewsbury but moved to Nottinghamshire when she was 7 years old. She was educated in the Hucknall area and entered the workforce immediately upon leaving school at 16 years of age. Her initial employment allowed her to train ‘on the job’ and she attended Clarendon College.
After a number of years, Penny decided to change careers and returned to college to study A-levels. After successfully completing these A-levels, she attended Nottingham Trent University where she studied on an accelerated degree course – a BA (hons) Degree in Humanities. This was followed by a year at Sheffield Hallam University to gain her PGCE which would allow her to teach.
Penny’s teaching career began in Derbyshire and eventually she moved to work at Oakdale Learning Centre, Mansfield where she developed expertise in Behaviour Support, Autism, Asperger’s, ADHD and preparing information for Education Health Care (EHC) Plan Assessments. She also gained her SENCo qualification as part of her continuing studies towards an MA. Penny was appointed ‘Teacher in Charge’ of the Learning Centre in 2014.
Penny became a governor at the Beech Academy in 2015.
